This child is enjoying the contentment and feeling of balance that happens when we feel completely relaxed, at rest and in harmony with the natural, living environment.

I have always loved Paul Gauguin’s painting “Woman in the Waves” and decided to playfully experiment with the image by adding the fantasy element of a mermaid’s tail and expanding the format to a wide horizontal space of water.

During the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we sheltered in place at home, so I had a lot more time to spend in the studio. I decided to make this painting for my dear friend Randall, who told me he always wanted an image of the California hills in summertime. It was healing for my heart to look at these bright, uplifting colors every day, and to anticipate my friend’s enjoyment in receiving it during a difficult time.

Maitresse Erzulie is invoked by Haitian Vodou believers to protect against the destructive powers of nature. She is depicted as a beautiful dark-skinned woman, associated with the bright rainbow spectrum, the serpent, and the water element. Erzulie represents beauty, passionate love and prosperity. She has powerful, beneficial and also demanding aspects. Having discovered Maitresse Erzulie in the novel On Beauty by Zadie Smith (2005, New York, Penguin Press), I started this painting in 2010, just two weeks before an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck Haiti, killing an estimate of between 46,000 and 316,000 people and creating a cholera epidemic. I worked on the painting during the year of recovery following the earthquake, which resulted in massive amounts of damage. As I painted, I prayed for the people of Haiti. It was the most challenging painting I have done.

Nearly all species of sea turtle are classified as endangered. They are slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, and face wide-scale habitat destruction caused by climate change. The young sea turtles in this painting were rescued and raised in a special tank on the Fijian island of Naitauba, then hand-released by Avatar Adi Da Samraj in the Pacific Ocean when they were mature enough to survive.

There is a belief among natives of the Pacific Northwest that the spirits of their ancestors who have passed from the body dance in the Aurora Borealis. The model for this fantasy scene is aerial artist Amy Rennie, who performs among the California coastal redwoods and at Burning Man.

In the summer of 2019, I asked three beautiful friends to pose in the garden for a “free rendering” of Rafael’s painting “The Three Graces”. Kheyala, Grace and Rhiannon were perfect models for a modern take on a classic image. I am already planning another painting from the dozens of photos I took of these graceful ladies that day.

The butterfly is a magical being that represents metamorphosis, or the natural process of growth from one form to another. Butterflies are beautiful, ephemeral, a symbol of spiritual rebirth, of moving through cycles of life, change and evolution on the physical, emotional, and spiritual level. A commemorative scene, one of the first California native peoples in a traditional boat made of tule reeds.

This painting was done after I spent 5 months on retreat at Adi Da Samrajashram in Fiji. I tried to express what it felt like to swim alone inside the island reef, moving silently in the coolness of calm tropical waters. This image suggests the feeling of being weightless, mindless, at peace in the limitless deep embrace of the ocean.
