As a girl, I longed to live on a ranch or farm, where I could ride a horse, but my family lived in cities and suburbs. When I moved to Lake County, California in 1975 and was invited to live at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary of Adidam, my dream of being surrounded by abundant, peaceful nature and acres of green lawn was finally fulfilled.

This painting was done after I spent 5 months on retreat at Adi Da Samrajashram in Fiji. I tried to express what it felt like to swim alone inside the island reef, moving silently in the coolness of calm tropical waters. This image suggests the feeling of being weightless, mindless, at peace in the limitless deep embrace of the ocean.

I have always loved Paul Gauguin’s painting “Woman in the Waves” and decided to playfully experiment with the image by adding the fantasy element of a mermaid’s tail and expanding the format to a wide horizontal space of water.
