One Family: Portraits

This painting was a gift for my Spiritual Master, Avatar Adi Da Samraj. The photograph was taken as He walked at low tide on the beach near His residence on Naitauba Island, Fiji, with His grandnieces. Limited edition giclee reproductions are available.

The child’s face expresses innocence and wonder as she gazes out the window, seeing butterflies, angelic beings and other mysteries of the imagination in the falling winter snow. Another of the irreplaceable original works lost in the Lake County Valley Fire in 2017.

When Mikki Canfield requested a portrait of the whole family, she asked for something unusual, more dynamic than the typical arrangement of everyone seated together and facing the viewer. We decided on a circus theme and did a family photo shoot with everyone in costume. I composed the photographs of each individual person in the style of a circus poster, with the parents as aerial artists, and the girls in various roles as circus performers. It was a totally delightful project, and this imaginative painting now has a place of honor in the family home.

I photographed these two children at a traditional lovo ceremony and community feast, a benefit event for their village school on Naitauba Island, Fiji.

As a girl, I longed to live on a ranch or farm, where I could ride a horse, but my family lived in cities and suburbs. When I moved to Lake County, California in 1975 and was invited to live at the Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary of Adidam, my dream of being surrounded by abundant, peaceful nature and acres of green lawn was finally fulfilled.

An invocation of protection for this critically endangered exquisitely beautiful big cat with a global population of less than 60. Their habitat is the high mountain forests of Eastern Russia and China. The girl wears a costume of the indigenous Omani people.

A special tree was planted for the birth of each daughter and included in the background as significant elements of this family’s life. We did an outdoor photo shoot, their beautiful mother Mikki selecting the outfits for each girl and adding fairy wings for a whimsical group portrait. It was heartbreaking to all of us when this painting was lost in the devastating Valley Fire in Lake County, California.

Irien wore her favorite Chinese red dress for a family portrait. Her pose in this photograph, so graceful and poised, inspired me to make this portrait.

I have known Daisy McCrackin since she was a child and painted her wearing several of Joan Hammerschmidts’s beautiful handmade hats. Daisy made her film debut in the straight-to-video movie A Crack in the Floor co-starring Mario Lopez. She has appeared in television series such as Cold Case and Angel and movies such as Hollywood Horror, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Love and Suicide, and Halloween: Resurrection. She wrote the soundtrack and starred in the film Till Death Do Us Part, released by Mica Film in August 2009.

The original painting was lost in the September 2017 Valley Fire. As I snapped the photo of Mary, her mother Mikki said, “Hold the seashell up to your ear and listen. Do you hear the sound of the ocean?” I love the expression of wonder on Mary’s face as she listened.

I was on a meditation retreat on the island of Naitauba, Fiji when Category 5 Cyclone Winston, the most severe tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, struck Fiji on February 20, 2016. The beautiful island was devastated, and people began the years of restoration. A few days after the storm passed, I found Lucy washing her clothes in a bucket of rainwater, bathed in light, a quiet moment of peace after the terrible howling of the destructive 180 mph winds.
